UCF makes the cut for Tallahassee DT

UCF is among the finalists for Tallahassee (Fla.) Godby defensive tackle Antwan Owens, who revealed his top 10 list on Sunday afternoon.

"First and foremost, I'm blessed and fortunate to have an opportunity to extend my career to the collegiate level," Owens tweeted. "These are my top 10 schools, but these are subject to change."

Emphasizing "no order," the 6-foot-4, 280-pounder listed UCF, Mississippi State, USF, Kentucky, Maryland, Indiana, Tulane, East Carolina, Purdue and Iowa State.

It may not be a coincidence that UCF and Mississippi State were the first two schools named.

In February, Owens declared the Knights his favorite after what he called a "perfect" visit, citing the staff's hospitality, the standout campus and facilities plus the proximity to home. He also thinks he'd be a good fit in UCF's 3-4 scheme.

"I could get early playing time there and be a three or four-year star. For me, that was a good thing to hear," Owens said of UCF. "I want to come on to a team and make an impact right away. A 3-4 scheme is perfect for me. Coach (Scott) Frost and Coach (Erik) Chinander said they liked how I'm fast and I'm good on my feet. I've got good footwork for a big guy, which is good for a 3-4 scheme where you have two tackles and there's nobody on the outside. It's great to have a mobile player at the DT position."

He hopes to visit as many schools as possible this summer with Mississippi State at the top of that list.

"Mississippi State is my number one priority when it comes to visiting because their coaches have been recruiting me really hard and I feel like that’s a good school," Owens told Rivals.com this week.

A decision will come prior to football camp.

"I will be making my commitment on July 29," Owens told Rivals. "It’s our media day. I’m trying to take as many visits as I can during the summer to get a feel for each school and each campus so I know that I'm making the right choice."

Owens was an All-Big Bend and All-State honorable mention selection as a junior, recording 57 solo tackles, five sacks and two interceptions.
