Matt Williams staying at UCF

Matt Williams isn't leaving UCF after all.

The senior guard, who had tested the transfer waters and recently committed to Wake Forest following a visit, announced on Saturday that he has decided to stay with the program.

"I just feel like UCF was the place for me," Williams told UCFSports.com in a text message. "It's the place where I started and where I should finish. Coach (Johnny) Dawkins and staff have an amazing plan for the entire program that I want to be a part of."

Williams averaged 8.3 points per game last season and is considered one of the team's best shooters.

It's good news for Dawkins, who has been tasked with trying to fill out a roster on short notice. The pool of available players is thin, so the Knights have been looking primarily at transfers. At least two players were said to be visiting this weekend: Marlon Jones, a 6-foot-9 power forward out of South Plans College in Levelland, Tex., and Dayon Griffin, a 6-foot-5 guard from Louisiana Tech.

Corban Collins, a 6-foot-3 guard and fifth-year graduate transfer from Morehead State, visited earlier in the week.

As long as there is no more attrition, UCF has 10 of 13 available scholarships on the 2016-17 roster spoken for. Williams, B.J. Taylor, A.J. Davis, Tanksley Efianayi, Chad Brown, Chance McSpadden, Tacko Fall and Justin McBride are the returning players while UCF is set to add high school signee Jeremy Sheppard and Michigan transfer Aubrey Dawkins later this summer. Dawkins however will not be eligible until the 2017-18 season.

Williams' re-commitment helps to offset the loss of fellow guard Adonys Henriquez, who announced his intentions to transfer last week. Henriquez is currently is visiting TCU and Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Murray State are reportedly some of his other school options.
